What is Disease?

There are many aspects to disease...
The word ‘disease’, if you look at it more closely, is dis-ease. It is the body not at ease.
One perspective of disease relates to what we take into our bodies. Throughout our life we ingest and absorb toxins. When we are young, our organs can still function well with toxins in them. A question asked most often, when people realize they have to change their lifestyle is “Why can’t I eat and live the way I used to when I was younger?”

When we are young if we mess up our internal ecosystem, our bodies may not show or notice the negative results because our youthful and thriving pancreas can produce the necessary enzymes to combat the poison. Our bodies are still powerful enough to compensate and rejuvenate themselves from their own inherent growth powers; similar to the way a seed can sprout from its own inherent energy without getting any nutrients.
As we age we start to experience "auto-intoxication." Auto-intoxication is the poisoning of the organs as a result of toxins building up in the intestines and then eventually seeping through the cell walls of the intestines and entering the blood stream; the lifeline of our organs. When the organs become poisoned, their ability to assimilate vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and to rejuvenate the body is diminished.
Another aspect of disease rarely discussed is the disease of energy. Now how can energy cause disease? To put it simply, there is a certain amount of energy dedicated to action, another amount to your emotion, another to your thought process, and so on. Let us say you have a certain amount dedicated for emotion. Today, in our present way of living, many of our emotions are not finding their full expression. That part of the energy, the unexpressed emotion, cannot become something else. Either it has to find an emotional expression or it will turn inward and do damaging things within you (perhaps that is why in Western countries there are so many mental problems).

People are afraid of their love, their grief, their joys... To laugh loudly is frowned upon, to cry loudly is embarrassing; to yell is a problem; this is our modern society. Sadhguru would say this is a restrictive culture, which causes you to behave in a certain way. So if your emotions never find full expression then that energy can turn around and do destructive things to you. This goes for all forms of energy- when it cannot find its full expression we suffer.

Where I think disease starts...
The most prevalent health issues I hear about are related to our digestive system. It seems logical that these gut "syndromes" and "diseases" are permutations of the more general problem of chronic indigestion and subsequent inflammation of the digestive tract. If Irritable Bowel Syndrome is allowed to progress with no healthy lifestyle changes does it progress to Leaky Gut Syndrome? If Leaky Gut continues on its track does it turn into Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's? Does this condition in which the absorption of nutrients is compromised affect muscle tissue and nerves throughout the body? So now we have a malnutritioned body that can lead to a host of other diseases.
I believe that the foods we eat today are probably the main cause of our digestive problems and subsequent diseases. Through our food we take in pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics and various other poisons, as well as large amounts of rancid grease, sugar and preservatives. Oriental medicine traditions believe that an over-acidic pH level in the body leads to inflammation. Interestingly, an acidic state is also very hospitable to candida yeast overgrowth. What foods create an acidic condition? Sugars, refined flours and grains, meat . . . Do you see the trend?

Stomach problems have been with humankind since the beginning of time. Our G.I. tract is quick to show any imbalance in life whether it's from poor food consumption, environmental toxins or from today's normal stress. However, in previous years a visit to the family doctor with "stomach troubles" would elicit a host of questions about eating and drinking habits and "worries". Then the doctor might prescribe an herbal tonic or tea, tell our ancestor to go a little easy on the brandy and spicy foods and maybe to take a day off to relax. In other words, bring life back into balance and digestion will follow!
Today, a person walks into a doctor’s office and tells the doctor that s/he has discomfort or pain in their stomach area all the time. Doctors then repeat the same thing back to them in doctor terms and say, "Yes, that's Irritable (pain or discomfort) Bowel (in your stomach area) Syndrome (all the time). Once someone starts using some fancy words we kind of surrender to them. They know more than we do! Now instead of trying to find out what is causing the pain in your stomach they look for something to give you to make it go away. And, coincidentally, there is a pharmaceutical drug that will take care of it (no lifestyle changes needed)! No thought was given on how to cure the problem, just temporarily treat it.

Today, medical science is more advanced than ever before, yet people have not become free of disease. I do not have all the answers, but I know there are clues everywhere on what has happened and how we can reverse it. There is a healthy way to live in balance with nature. Food is a great part of that. We truly are what we eat.

Just as disease takes time to manifest we can reverse the damage taking steps in the right direction such as:
  • Eating right! Keeping the proper microflora balance in the digestive tract.
  • Internal cleanses often (at least twice a year).
  • Proper exercise and activity – expend your mental, physical and spiritual energy!
  • Keeping your life full with purpose vitalizes your immune system (refer to What Are You Really Hungry For).
