grade diatomaceous earth (often referred to as "DE") has many uses
and excellent health benefits for humans, plants, and animals. Diatomaceous
Earth is an off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of microscopic
one-celled plants (phytoplankton) called diatoms that lived in the oceans and
lakes that once covered the western part of the US and other parts of the world.
DE is almost pure silica (with some beneficial trace minerals).
Mammals and Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous Earth does not hurt mammals. We can eat it
as well as our animals (Food Grade only- this is important to remember). We can
rub it all over our skin, our hair and eat it and we are unharmed.
This is a picture of Diatom (magnified 7000 times). It
looks like a cylinder full of holes. This cylinder has a very strong negative
charge. As these millions of cylinders move through the stomach and digestive
tract, they attract and absorb fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticides,
and drug residues, E.coli and heavy metals. These are trapped inside the
cylinder and passed out of the body. In addition, any larger parasites that
happen to be in the stomach or digestive tract are "cut up" and
killed by the sharp edges of the DE. All of these activities result in a much
healthier body with less sickness.
On the hardness scale where diamonds are a 9, DE is
a 7. This is very important because as those millions of tiny hard and
sharp DE cylinders pass through the small and large intestines, they
"scrub" the walls. After only a few months of taking DE, the
intestine wall is no longer coated with the harmful mucus and molds but CLEAN!!
The advantages of this are several:
- Regular bowel movements (This is the number one
comment everyone makes about DE and the first thing I noticed when I started
- Healthier colon. This is especially important as
we get age. A clean, healthy colon keeps away polyps, cancers, and ulcers. Many
spend thousands of dollars to get colonics to do the same thing as Diatomaceous
- Many users report increased energy and needing
less sleep. This is a result of all the food and nutrients that are taken in
being better absorbed into the blood stream. With a coated colon many nutrients
never get absorbed.
A small amount of Diatomaceous Earth gets absorbed into
the blood stream as silica. One
of the benefits of Silica is that it helps to destroy bad fats. It has been stated
through user testimonials that DE has lowered their cholesterol by 40-50
points, and they are amazed at how their high blood pressure goes down.
The benefits of silica are many. In
today's grains, there is actually a shortage of silica. Years ago, the silica
found in our food was adequate, but with today's hybrids and depleted soils,
⅓ of the silica needed is supplied in our food. Diatomaceous Earth is a simple
and inexpensive way to get the silica your body needs.
Other benefits of silica to the body:
- Sore joints and ligaments feel better
- Skin clears up (acne-age spots-psoriasis)
- Hair and nails are stronger and grow faster
- Stronger teeth and gums
- Healthier respiratory tract--less coughing
- Menopause has less symptoms
- Healthier urinary tract
Organic farmers feed food grade diatomaceous earth to
their animals to cure whatever ails them. Many farmers swear that the stuff
kills all sorts of worms and parasites. Also, natural food grade diatomaceous
earth contains 15 trace minerals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium,
copper, zinc iron, phosphorous, selenium, etc. People note shinier coats,
better overall health, better production, etc. in their animals who are fed
food grade DE regularly.
When shopping be sure that you get food grade diatomaceous earth
with a guarantee stating to have "less than 0.5% crystalline silica".
Do not get a product that is mixed with ‘something else’. If the label states "97%
diatomaceous earth" it makes you wonder what the other 3% is.
This was my first question when I started using DE; how
much and when? I can tell you it will truly depend on your bodies current needs-
but here are some ideas to start off with.
- Take 1 TBSP in the morning in a big glass of water or
Well before breakfast, to allow DE time to move through
and absorb toxins from your digestive tract without interfering with absorbing
nutrients from foods or liquids.
- Take 1 tsp before a meal (3 times a day)
- Take 1 TBSP in the evening
Long after eating, to allow DE time to move through and
absorb toxins from ones digestive tract during the night.
You do not want to detox so much that you feel very
uncomfortable. If you notice you are, back off the dosage a little. If you do
not feel anything, feel free to increase your dosage and play with the timing.
Some people take up to ¼ Cup a day!
DE deposits are mined from underwater beds or from
ancient dried lake bottoms thousands of years old. This means, diatomaceous
earth has an unlimited shelf life provided you keep it dry. There are food
grade DE products that are yellow or tan in color which indicates higher iron
content. Those which are gray in color contain more clay.
How safe is Diatomaceous Earth
Do not get diatomaceous earth in the eyes. DE
is drying so be careful when you are placing it for pest control- you do not want
to put it out when you or your pets are down-wind of it. DE is drying to your
skin, hands, and feet, just as it can be to your pets. Do NOT use heavily in
carpet. Some advise too much DE causes vacuum problems and could cause too much
to become airborne- but remember it is not toxic! Inhaling it causes coughing
as you would inhaling any flour-like substance.
The only legitimate concern I have found is DE that is
not food grade. Pool filter grade DE contains up to 70% "crystalline
silica". Various citations on the web state that if you inhale the pool
filter grade DE over a length of time you could get cancer. Pool filter grade DE
has been heated then chemically treated and considered a poison, so it is always
of utmost importance to only obtain food grade diatomaceous earth to use in your
system, with your pets and around your household.
If you were to inhale a massive quantity you
should follow the protocol on this MSDS
sheet for crystalline silica.
Food grade diatomaceous earth will contain less than 1% crystalline silica, in
most cases even less.
Bugs and Diatomaceous Earth
On a microscopic level, the diatomaceous earth particles
are very sharp; under a microscope, it looks like shards of glass (glass is
made from silica). When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (beetle-type
insect such as fleas, cockroaches, bed bugs, ants, etc.) DE gets caught between
their joints and works under the shell puncturing their body. As they move, the
DE acts like razor blades and cuts them up which then leads to dehydration and
death. The best part is DE is completely nontoxic. It has been reported to be
the most effective solution when fighting pests.
*The worldwide web has many resources for proper
applications of DE to get rid of all insect types. You are also more than
welcome to email me for suggestions*
One strange thing about diatomaceous earth is
that for it to work on killing bugs, you have to keep it dry. Even morning dew
can make diatomaceous earth ineffective. Also, DE is not bait. If you put a
little bit in a pile somewhere, the bugs are not drawn to it and they do not invite
all their friends. DE is a very inexpensive, non toxic (great if you have
children or pets) and generally more effective than anything the pesticide
companies have to offer. Test it for yourself. Catch a few bugs; put them in a
jar with some DE. Shake it so they get some on them and wait. If you want ants
march through a pile the result is almost instant.
I have tens of thousands of dollars in the past ten years since
my cancer experience learning about health, trying different alternative methods,
many different supplements, witch doctors (half kidding)... It has been an
invaluable journey but at the same time you ask yourself - IS ANYTHING EVER
GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE??? My greatest culprit- that took me years to
discover was candida. Even after discovering this and reading journals,
articles and books solving it has been overwhelming. I have an extensive
section on Candida and cures on this website. My cravings for sugar and
carbohydrates was uncontrollable- even with my high level of self discipline.
A very good friend, Rachel Kincaid, mentioned Diatomaceous
Earth in an email. I read about it and thought it sounded interesting. Did not
think about it for a week- but like anything the Universe REALLY wants me to be
aware of the information came to me through others sources. So I decided to try
I read the dosage requirements, and of course when I do
anything I always go big. I thought I
would start off with 2 TBSP of DE in some water at night for a week and see how
I feel. Oh my goodness I was exhausted! The entire week I was so tired I could
barely function. Serious detoxing was occurring and I realized maybe I should
back off a little. So I adjusted it to 1 TBSP at night. This helped a lot, but
then I also learned that I needed to take it before 7 pm or I'd be up for hours.
It does have an energizing affect (varies with everyone though). I state this with all sincerity- for the first time in my life I do not crave
sugar or breads. I eat smaller meals and feel very satisfied. I rarely go back
for seconds. I feel AMAZING. To constantly battle an addiction (as I mentioned
my weakness is a sugar/carbohydrate combination) is tiring and frustrating. Although
strange to eat a normal proportioned meal and not crave sugar afterwards, it is
a gift I am grateful for.
As with anything we were not raised to believe
in- skepticism is involved. This may not be something you want to try, but you
might want to know you already may be eating it. Food grade diatomaceous earth
is EPA approved to be mixed with grains to control mealworms and other pests who
feast on grains. This fact is
astounding- A study done by ACRES, USA, Inc. advised that after 12 months of
storage, the food grade diatomaceous earth treated grain had 15 insects,
compared to 4884 for malathion (insecticide) and 16,994
for untreated grain. You are probably already eating some slight amount of diatomaceous
earth every time you eat any bread, pasta or other grain based food.
